You know, sometimes things just work better than expected. I have been looking for a lens hood for my Nikon 50mm f/1.8, and I just hate those rubber ones.
While my lens is new, it is an older design - designed before a lot of emphasis was made on the use of lens hoods. For that reason, my lens does not have the typical bayonet mount for the hood as most modern lenses have, but rather you need to use the filter thread for the hood. And the lens itself does not come with a lens hood.
Your choices are that you can buy a over-priced Nikon rubber hood, or find something 3rd party.
I have tried several rubber hoods for this lens, and even a cheap petal screw on hood - the kind that has a second ring that is supposed to keep the hood on tight - which does not work because it is so cheaply made (you can see my other reviews for my thoughts about that piece of junk).
Then I ran across this hood, and while it was a bit more expensive than most 3rd party lens hoods, it was only marginally so, and a whole lot nicer than the typical bargain hood.
Sometimes I guess you get what you pay for.
The hood attaches to the filter threads, and it attaches very tightly. So much so that you can actually unscrew a filter attached to the lens with it. It attaches with a clamp style mechanism, not unlike Nikon lens caps. That way, you don't have to screw the hood on or off, just squeeze the two clamps and place it over the threads, then release.
Another very nice thing is that while you cannot attach any filters on the lens after the hood (and you would not want to anyway due to the risk of vignetting), you can attach the factory lens cap on the hood - at least Nikon's clamp type cap. There is a groove in the inside diameter of the lens hood for the clamping mechanism of the lens cap. Nice.
This is probably too long of a review for such a simple product, but I am quite pleased with it. And given a 5yr warranty, it is a nice addition to your camera bag. It's kind of funny though, it's made by Polaroid (do they even make cameras anymore?).
